6 feet above ground

... my feet as they rest waiting for the bus, 835 Market Street, San Francisco ...

12 and half thoughts went through my mind as I stood there waiting for the bus. One of those thoughts were about a friend who's living abroad.

Today I heard from her, Jess, who's studying medicine in Cuba (4th year). She "chatted" me a story from the ER room:

So, the guy,80 years with all his problem, we couldn't get a vein and then he lost a pulse and we had about 2 minutes to shove a tube down his throat and start CPR. Blood all around. I didn't do it all I just gave breaths, while another doc pumped the heart. But, he got a pulse back. I thought he was a gonnnnner. You don't really think. You just do.

To be part of something like that amazes me. To help give life back is the ultimate gift. It's the highest reward for all the effort required from medical school.

Clarity by the Bay

... an afternoon in Union Square ...

I bought a last minute Amtrak ticket to spend the weekend in San Francisco. I met up with some friends but have also used the trip as an opportunity to work and study.

For the techs out there I've been absorbing Ruby on Rails and needed to break away from my homelife to recharge the mind. It's been very refreshing. Reminds me when I was a kid learning to program. Back then I didn't have any distractions along with less responsibility and was able to learn through curiosity. I felt the need for that state of mind again and little trips like this help.

yes...blame it on hawaii...simple life is a good life
